Is Johnny Depp trying to completely disappear from Hollywood, or is he just really committed to his craft? Because hunty, when the man showed up at San Diego Comic-Con looking like he’d been living in a cave for the past decade, we literally had to check our sources TWICE.
The 63-year-old actor made a surprise appearance at the California convention on Thursday, July 23, dressed head-to-toe as Ebenezer Scrooge for Paramount Pictures’ new Christmas film, and let’s just say the transformation was giving “unhinged theater kid energy” in the BEST way possible. With the prosthetics, the costume, and that absolutely chaotic facial hair situation, Depp was so unrecognizable that fans genuinely thought they were looking at a stranger. Ma’am, sir, WHAT is going on?
The pop-up installation at Comic-Con was supposed to drum up excitement for the holiday movie, but instead it created mass confusion. Social media absolutely ERUPTED with fans doing double-takes, triple-takes, and basically every take imaginable. “Is that even him?” became the question of the day, and honestly, we’re still not 100% sure. The makeup artists deserve a standing ovation, an Emmy, and probably therapy after this project because the work is INSANE.
Sources say Depp fully committed to the character, staying in costume and character throughout the Comic-Con appearance. Because apparently, when you’re getting paid to look like a bitter old miser, you don’t half-ass it. We respect the dedication, even if we’re slightly traumatized by the whole aesthetic situation.
The Ebenezer film is shaping up to be Paramount’s big holiday cash grab for the season, and if they’re willing to let Depp go full method-actor goblin mode in prosthetics, you know they’re serious about this project. The movie trailer has people divided—some are actually excited to see this bizarre reimagining of the classic Dickens tale, while others are asking if they can unsee what they just witnessed.
Fans are already debating whether this transformation is genius or absolutely unhinged. Either way, it’s definitely got people talking, which is probably exactly what the studio wanted. Mission accomplished, Johnny. Mission. Accomplished.
