Did a simple summer swim to beat the heat just turn into one of sports’ most heartbreaking tragedies? The answer is heartbreakingly yes, and honestly, we’re still reeling.
French soccer sensation Kenzo Kies, who was absolutely KILLING it on the field at En Avant Guingamp in Ligue 2, tragically drowned in the Rhône river near Lyon on Monday, June 22. The rising star was only 21 years old. Talk about a life cut way too short—we can’t even.
Here’s what went down, and it’s absolutely devastating: During one of those brutal European heatwaves that’s been melting the continent, Kies decided to cool off with three friends by taking a dip in the river. What should’ve been a refreshing break from scorching temperatures turned into an absolute nightmare. First responders pulled him from the water, but despite their best efforts, the young athlete couldn’t be saved. He was pronounced dead at the hospital.
The soccer world is absolutely SHOOK right now. Teammates, coaches, and fellow athletes have been flooding social media with tributes to the rising star. One teammate posted: “You brought light to our team and joy to everyone around you. Rest easy, brother.” And honestly, we’re not crying, YOU’RE crying.
En Avant Guingamp released a statement saying they’re devastated by the loss and sending love to Kies’ family. The club is reportedly planning a memorial tribute, because this kind of tragedy deserves to be honored properly.
What makes this even more tragic? Kies was supposed to be one of those athletes we’d be watching for DECADES. He had the talent, he had the passion, and he definitely had the potential to become a household name. His future was literally infinite, and now… well, it’s just heartbreaking to think about what could’ve been.
The incident has also sparked conversations about water safety during extreme heat events. Because apparently we need to be reminded that cooling off in natural bodies of water can be mega dangerous, even for young, athletic people. Stay safe out there, everyone.
What do you think? A) We need better public warnings about river safety during heatwaves B) This was just a tragic accident that couldn’t have been prevented
