Honey, can we just talk about how absolutely UNHINGED some people get when they think patriotism means waving Confederate flags? Because girl, the tea is piping hot and we are SERVING it this Independence Day weekend!
So apparently, while the rest of us were grilling hot dogs and enjoying fireworks like normal human beings, about 400 members of the white supremacist group Patriot Front decided to have their own little fashion show meet hate rally in downtown Washington D.C. during the nation’s 250th Independence Day celebration. These clowns all showed up in matching blue shirts like they were attending some kind of sinister summer camp, marching through the streets with American AND Confederate flags like they invented patriotism.
The audacity! The CONFEDERACY LOST, bestie. That was over 150 years ago. But sure, let’s carry around a flag that literally represents slavery and racism in 2024. Make it make sense!
According to reports, this motley crew gathered outside a public transit station before starting their little hate parade. Meanwhile, Trump supporters were apparently seeking shelter in the National Museum of African American History and Culture – which is actually hilarious when you think about the irony of that choice. They really said, ‘Let me stand in a museum dedicated to Black history while white supremacists march outside.’ The disconnect is STUNNING.
Social media has absolutely lost it, and rightfully so. People are dragging these extremists from every angle, pointing out how their so-called patriotism is nothing but a thinly veiled excuse for bigotry. One user tweeted, ‘Independence Day shouldn’t mean independence for hate groups,’ and we couldn’t have said it better ourselves.
This whole situation is giving fascist cosplay meets Fourth of July disaster. These people really looked in the mirror, put on their matching shirts, grabbed some flags, and thought, ‘This is it. This is our moment.’ Sis, your moment is NOT it. Your moment is embarrassing and frankly, terrifying.
The fact that this is what made headlines during a time when we should’ve been celebrating our nation’s anniversary together is absolutely tragic. But here we are, and here they were, reminding everyone why we need to stay vigilant against this garbage.
